Synopsis for "Deathstalk: A Test of Mettle"

Wolverine (Vol. 2) #78

Continued from last issue...

Logan is speeding on his motorcycle, Honor Sword drawn, as he approaches his old foe Bloodscream who has transformed into a horrific monstrous form, ready to land a killing strike....

Flashback to four weeks earlier... Wolverine is travelling by foot in the Alberta wilderness. Realizing that it's going to get cold soon he kills a wolf so that he can use it's fur to keep himself warm as he travels through the snow covered mountains of the Rockies. As he begins his work he picks up a familiar scent and realizes he's being followed. Not far behind in the town of Hatch Junction, Bloodscream and Cylla are still on the trail of Wolverine, bent on getting revenge against him. They come across an old man who Logan has left his motorcycle in the care of. Confirming that Logan went up into the mountains, Bloodscream slays the old man to feast on his blood and they continue following Logan.

Some time later, Logan is travelling through the frozen wilderness, knowing that his enemies are following him, but he plods on, continuing to lead them deeper and deeper into the forest. Cylla and Bloodscream continue their trek even though Cylla's power levels are getting low and she is getting hungry. Bloodscream offers her to feast on some of the old man, whose corpse he's been carrying to supply him with sustenance, however the cyborg refuses to participate in cannibalism. They continue to trek onward as a blizzard hits the region, as Wolverine soldiers on he recalls the story of the creation of the Honor Blade that was told to him by Mariko. How it was made hundreds of years ago by Yashida Hoken and the legendary Masumune from metal ore collected from a meteorite.

As Cylla and Bloodscream press on, Bloodscream shares with his travelling companion his origins: He explains that hundreds of years ago he was a Naval Surgeon for legendary pirate Francis Drake. During a raid on Drake's ship, the man who would become Bloodscream would take a bullet in the gut. Instead of dying a painful death, Drake would hand over the injured man to a necromancer named Dagoo. Dagoo cast a spell that transformed him into the vampire creature he is to this very day, and his first order of business upon transformation was to feast upon Dagoo, however not before Dagoo would impart some important information: That he can end his hunger when he feeds upon the blood of an immortal man, and that the only thing that can truly kill him is a blade made out of metal from another world. Bloodscream then spent the following centuries trying to find just such a man to break the curse. He believed he found it when he fought for the Nazi's during World War II and he happened upon Logan during his time with the Canadian military. He would recognize Logan much later when he was operating out of Madripoor as Patch and renew his obsession with trying to feast on Logan's blood.

As the days turn into weeks, Logan presses on, and feeling sorry for his enemies would leave food behind for them after leaving them nothing to eat for days. When Cylla and Bloodscream happen upon a dead wolfs corpse Cylla attempts to eat it, however Bloodscream stops her saying that Logan is mocking them and urges them to press forward as there is a town not far from where they are.

Wolverine happens to be in this town, interestingly named Logan, chowing down at a diner. He is about to place a call Heath Junction to have his motorcycle transported to Logan but learns that the man who operated the shipping station was murdered four weeks earlier and that someone delivered his motorcycle here because it was labelled "Logan", the shippers hoping that the owner would claim it there. Going outside, Logan finds himself confronted by both Cylla and Bloodscream, the two very much weakened by their trek through the wilderness. Bloodscream then betrays Cylla, explaining he kept her along only as a source of food and drains her of all her blood. With his energy rejuvenated Bloodscream transforms into his monstrous form to attack Logan.

As Logan starts up his motorcycle he pulls the Honor Sword from it's sheath and slices Bloodscream in the face, seemingly killing him. With his enemies vanquished, Wolverine speeds off to continue his journey on the road.

X-Men #140

Continued from last issue...

Angel flies around Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Having only recently returned to the X-Men, he is still adjusting to the team’s most recent members. He converses briefly with Colossus, as the latter pulls a rotting tree stump out of the ground. Professor X summons Angel and asks him his opinion on the X-Men. Angel does not hide his feelings concerning Wolverine. He thinks that he is a dangerous psychopath with "freaky claws". Professor X reminds Angel that the purpose of the school is to cater to all mutants – no matter how rough they may appear on the outside.

In Salem Center, Storm endures an uncomfortable encounter with an amorous pimp before stopping at Stevie Hunter’s dance studio to pick up Kitty Pryde. She is surprised to see how closely Kitty and Stevie have become in so short a time, and shamefully admits to herself that she is growing jealous. Kitty phases into the passenger side of the car, and Storm scolds her for such a showy display of her powers in public. Kitty assures her that she checked to make sure no one was watching before she attempted her stunt.

Meanwhile in Northern Canada, the Wendigo charges at Nightcrawler, forcing the X-man to retreat farther into the woods. The surrounding environment is too congested for Nightcrawler to risk blindly teleporting, so he avoids Wendigo's grasp by acrobatically flipping through the trees. The monster manages to latch onto him however and begins squeezing the life from his body. Nightcrawler has no choice but to teleport blind, and he transports himself several yards directly into the air and then teleports again safely to the ground. The Wendigo catches up to him however, and throws him hard against the side of a wood cabin.

Inside the cabin, Vindicator, Wolverine, Shaman and Snowbird are discussing their strategy on how to deal with the Wendigo. Wolverine hears the sound of Nightcrawler's body slamming against the side of the building and rushes outside. He finds Nightcrawler's unconscious form, and the Wendigo brandishing a pick-up truck as if it were a baseball bat. Vindicator flies outward from behind Wolverine and begins firing his laser blasts at the Wendigo, but the Wendigo easily bats him away. Wendigo throws the pick-up truck which explodes creating a fire. He then takes off deeper into the woods.

Shaman uses powder from his medicine pouch to put out the flames while Snowbird and Wolverine begin chasing the Wendigo. They eventually track the monster back to its lair where he has camper Eileen Parnall and her infant son trapped inside of a cave. He tells Snowbird to regroup with the others while he tackles the creature directly. Like his namesake, Wolverine dives on top of the Wendigo and begins voraciously slashing at him with his claws. The Wendigo has supernatural strength however, and is able to continue fighting despite his injuries. He grabs Wolverine and begins smashing him against the side of a tree. Suddenly Nightcrawler arrives and attacks the monster from behind, distracting it long enough to give Wolverine a chance to catch his breath.

Snowbird returns with Vindicator, and realizes that only brute savagery can possibly stop this menace. She transforms into an actual wolverine and launches herself at the monster. She succeeds in bringing the Wendigo down, but the violent passions of her animal form have consumed her and she is now completely feral. Wolverine softly approaches her, and coaxes her down until she is tame enough to revert to her normal humanoid form.

Shaman uses his magic to counteract the curse of the Wendigo. He cures the creature's condition, transforming him back into the human, Georges Baptiste. Vindicator is faced with a difficult decision. As a duly licensed agent of the Canadian government, he is forced to place Baptiste under arrest.

When Vindicator returns to Parliament, the Prime Minister informs him that the Ministry of Defense no longer maintains the budget to continue funding Department H. He tells him that he will allow him to keep his security status, but as of this moment, Alpha Flight is officially disbanded.

Epilogue: In a maximum security prison in Demming, New Mexico, the evil mutant known as the Blob escapes from his prison cell. He refers to a mysterious contact who has invited him to join a new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

Synopsis for "Logan: Shadow Society"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Logan: Shadow Society #1
A secret agent, Neil Langram, is killed whilst waiting for Logan. His murderer says that Logan is next. Carol Danvers is on an undercover mission to land an arms dealer. The deal is compromised, but Logan bails her out of trouble. He was sent instead of Langram, by one of his superiors, and Carol is thankful for that. The arms dealer is left to Carol’s department, and they head off for a beer. As they discuss old times, a call comes through, informing them of Langram’s death. At the crime scene, Logan swears revenge but his superior, Malcolm, warns him off the case. Later, Logan tries to access government data banks, but his machine explodes when he attempts to gain entry. Carol leaves Logan to get some sleep but, two hours later, Logan is attacked in his apartment. He manages to escape, and calls control to take him in. Things are getting heavy. When he waits for them at a hockey stadium, he is targeted by yet more assassins. Someone in his own organization is looking to kill him, and Logan wants to discover why. He and Carol decide to break into the Canadian Ministry of Defense, and easily grab a key from two hapless guards. Inside a hitherto unseen section of the basement, they find a list with both his and Langram’s name on it. It is a document called The Mutant Agenda. They return to New York City and find Dr. Perry Edwards, whose name was also on the list. He is the author of a book which will expose powerful mutants in high places. They are attacked by gunmen on Edwards’ trail, and Edwards soon explains all about this mutant hierarchy, once the gunmen are disposed of. He then takes them to the Hellfire Club, where his source informs him that super-powered mutants are planning to take over the club’s Inner Circle. Logan decides to enter the club, asking Carol to take Edwards to safety. Inside, he is found by guards, but he manages to beat them up and get a lead on his next mission. Carol then rescues him from more guards, and they fly to Canada, after Carol uses her department’s database to determine where their destination might be. At the Hellfire Club, Sebastian Shaw and his murderous partner, Sabretooth, discuss Logan’s involvement. Shaw knows that all they’ve prepared is in ruins, and orders Sabretooth to deal with it. Creed finds Logan and Carol in the Canadian installation, and reveals he has murdered not only Langram, but Edwards, Malcolm and several other people involved in the affair. He taunts Logan about him being a mutant and, when Logan discovers he murdered Neil Langram, he strikes mercilessly. Unfortunately, Creed’s healing factor allows him to detonate a bomb, which destroys the complex. Months later, as Carol is recovering, she informs Logan that someone in power must believe their story, and she’s heard of a senator named Kelly who might like to hear about it. Logan allows her to decide what to do with the information. He wants to forget about mutants and hopes all this will simply blow over.
