Wolverine (Vol. 2) #84

Continued from last issue...

Wolverine, Guardian, Vindicator, Harry Tabenshaw and DeLong are trapped in a northern Canadian research facility surrounded by a growing pack of lupine creatures that resemble the Hunter in Darkness. Locked in the facilities dry storage, the group begins to consider how to get out alive. With the Hudson's colleague Simpson needing immediate medical attention due to the fact her stomach was sliced open by one of the creatures, the men attempt to fight their way through the gathering creatures, but find they are too many and are forced to retreat back to the freezer. Their efforts to save Simpson are in vein however as she soon dies of her wounds. While deciding what to do next, they puzzle over how there can be so many creatures like the Hunter when the Hunter was supposedly the last of it's kind. The Hudson's deduce that these creatures were in suspended animation under the ice until global warming allowed them to thaw enough to free themselves.

They note that the Hunters are very intelligent and there must be a leader of the pack that is directing them all. Sure enough, the original Hunter in Darkness, now much older than when Logan first encountered the creature is giving orders to it's pack. Upon the Hunter's direction they sever the main power cable feeding electricity into the facility. Realizing they have to do something to defend themselves, Logan notes that he creatures don't see very well and that they must view things via infrared and that if they use a fire to obscure the creatures visions he can get to the exo-suit that was piloted by the late Sverdrup and use it to fight off the creatures, believing that because his reflexes were faster than the late physicists he would have more of a fighting chance. Agreeing, the others hold the creatures off with their guns and lighting fires as Logan rushes toward the exo-suit and -- hopefully -- their key to survival.

Elsewhere in the Canadian wilderness, Albert, Elsie-Dee and Bloodscream continue to track down Logan, with Albert using his scanners to lead the way. When pauses to send out another pulse with his long range scanners he detects, to his and Elsie-Dee's surprise, the Hunter in Darkness -- whom they believed they had left behind in the 18th Century. Bloodscream secretly wonders if feeding off the Hunter in Darkness is what it will take to break his vampire curse, and asks them to explain their story. Elsie-Dee explains how they found Wolverine's bones buried in the funeral mound some time ago[1] and that they traded a cruise missile to Mystique and Spiral in exchange for Spiral sending them back in time to investigate how Wolverine could have died in the distant past, teleporting her, Albert and the Hunter in Darkeness back in time. They would find themselves transported back in time and would make friends with the local tribe of Siksika tribe. They would look all over the wilderness to try and find Wolverine, but would find no trace of him, ultimately during their search they would come across creatures that were the same species as the Hunter in Darkness, and the old beast would leave them to join the pack. Shortly thereafter, Albert and Elsie-Dee would go into stasis mode in order to conserve energy. With their tale done, Albert confirms with another scan that the creature he detected was indeed their old ally the Hunter in Darkness.

Back further up north, Logan gets into the exo-suit and uses it to fight off the pack of Hunters. During the battle, Logan comes face to face with an older creature that he recognizes as the Hunter in Darkness. Although the creature has aged considerably since the last time he saw him, the Hunter recognizes Logan as the wild man who saved it from a hunters trap years ago and upon this realization calls all his prodigy back. As they flee, DeLong attempts to shoot them but Logan punches him out. With the threat over, Logan asks Harry if he can fly him back south.

While back in the Alberta wilderness, Albert continues his scan and detects his stealth bomber, telling Elsie-Dee that it was stashed in the Hudson Bay and they decide to go and recover it. Logan meanwhile is taken to the cabin he used to live at with Silver Fox to pay his respects at her grave. Learning from Harry of an old Ojibway tradition where the living would morn the dead by singing a song about their spirit. Enlightened by this tradition, Logan does just that, no longer mourning Silver Fox's loss, but finding joy in all the good memories the two had together.

Synopsis for "The Phalanx Covenant: Final Sanction Part 1"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Wolverine (Vol. 2) #85

Cyclops and Jean Grey are flying toward Muir Island when they notice that the entire island complex has been swarmed by something. It is Larissa, Egon and Nkotha, human converts belonging to the Phalanx, who have come to the island in an attempt to absorb all of Moira MacTaggert's extensive data on the mutant genetic code in the hopes of cracking it and absorbing mutants into their collective. They are attacked by the Phalanx, forcing an emergency landing of their ship. When Egon attempts to attack them Cyclops unleashes an optic blast that has little effect as the creature splits off into component parts to avoid the blast.

Just then, Harry Tabenshaw's airplane flies over the island and Wolverine jumps out and begins to parachute to the ground. He had received an urgent mental call from Professor X asking him to check out the island and he too is soon attacked by the Phalanx. When he tries to fight off Larissa with his claws, her head splits into components and attempts to entangle him but he is blasted free by Cyclops and his fall is cushioned by Jean's telekinetic. When Wolverine compares notes with Scott and Jean, he learns that they were unaware of the Professor's psychic call for help and that they came to the island with information regarding the Legacy Virus[2].

Meanwhile within the facility, the members of the Phalanx decide that it's time to report to Stephen Lang and Larissa merges with the Central Consciousness to report about the attack on Muir Island. Lang and Cameron Hodge are busy attempting to once more assimilate one of the X-Men, using Psylock as their subject when Larissa arrives. Fearing that she might learn that he's secretly using the Phalanx as a means of exterminating mutants, Lang refuses to merge and share data and forces her to return to Muir Island, raising her suspicions. Back on the island as Wolverine, Cyclops and Jean Grey regroup, Wolverine apologizes for not making her and Scott's wedding[3]notes that the look in Jean's eyes is that of someone with years more experience than her actual age, and Jean skirts around the subject[4] when they are attacked by the Phalanx again. They are saved in the nick of time by the timely arrival of Cable who blasts away the Phalanx with his plasma guns.

Although Wolverine doesn't fully believe that it's really Cable[5]. However Jean confirms it, and when Logan says "I hear you red", it triggers a memory in Cable's mind about his raising by Redd and Slim (unaware that it was Cyclops and Jean who really raised him). Comparing notes, they realize that the Phalanx are trying to access the data on mutants, and that they need access to the computer as well in order to track the missing X-Men through its Cerebro program. Realizing that he Phalanx have a group consciousness, Jean and Cable decide to pool their psi-powers together and try a mental assault on their enemies.

As Larissa returns to tell her Phalanx comrades that Lang refused an interface, they are attacked telepathically by Jean and Cable. Jean tries her best to prevent Cable from learning the truth about their jaunt to the future, however key phrases cause Cable to relive certain memories of when he was raised by Redd and Slim. As they attempt their psychic assault, the Phalanx decide to combine their powers and when they realize that Cable is infected with a technorganic virus they decide to try and make it flash out of control. While in the real world, Wolverine and Cyclops fight their way into the Muir Island research center where Cyclops accesses the Cerebro unit and learns the location of the missing X-Men.

As Cable struggles with his weak psi-talent, Jean gets him to focus and they fight off the Phalanx. However letting their guard down allows the Phalanx to counter attack on Cable causing their link to break. Before Jean can reestablish it, Cable decides to get physical and pulls out one of his guns and opens fire, blasting the physical form to bits as Cyclops and Wolverine flee the complex. Scott tells them that the missing X-Men were taken to Chomolunema near Mount Everest in Tibet. He tells them that they have to leave soon because in accessing Cerebro he set off a fail safe that will cause the building to self destruct. Cable send the others off telling them that he will hold off the Phalanx by himself.

As Cable attempts to fight off the reformed Phalanx, they once more target is technorganic virus, weakening him. As Jean holds Harry Tabenshaw's plane with her telekinetic powers so they can board it without it landing, Logan goes back and smashes the Phalanx composite and pulls Cable away from the scene. They all get aboard Tabenshaw's plane and fly away just as the island explodes killing the Phalanx components, they are saved by the explosion thanks to Jean's powers. With the immediate battle over and their course set to Tibet, Cable tells them that their battle against the Phalanx unearthed old memories and he'd like to be alone. While at the Phalanx headquarters, Cameron Hodge and Stephen Lang learn the fate of their minions. When Hodge asks if the remaining X-Men would dare to attack them, Lang tells him rhetorically, "They're X-Men, Hodge. What Do you Think?"

Wolverine (Vol. 2) #86

Story continued from last issue and Cable Vol 1 16....

Having recovered their modified stealth bomber from the bottom of the Hudson Bay, Elsie-Dee, Albert and Bloodscream resume their search for Wolverine. Albert sends out another probe scans but can't get any information because, but his scans are blocked by some alien technology[6]. Bloodscream then speaks up and asks them to explain the full story about their trip into the past, a story that Elsie-Dee is more than willing to tell:

Some time ago, Elsie-Dee, Albert and the Hunter in Darkness were sent back in time by Spiral so that they counld investigate the mystery of ancient Adamantium laced bones that was once Wolverine[7]. They would find themselves in the 18th century landing in the middle of a battle between two warring factions of the Siksika tribe, one group led by the evil Man-Killer Wolf. Albert, Elsie-Dee and the Hunter in Darkness fight off the attackers, mortally wounding Man-Killer Wolf and sending them fleeing. To their shock and surprise they are confronted by Forge, who is much older than last time they met him, but he remembers their last encounter[8]. He takes them into one of the Siksika huts and they meet an older Wolverine. They explain to Elsie-Dee and Albert that they 10 years ahead of their present history, and that hey had come back in time to stop the ancient evil known as the Adversary who has been manipulating Man-Killer Wolf and divided the Siksika tribe to create as much chaos as possible.

While they are explaining things to the two androids, Man-Killer Wolf has returned to his camp and is confronted by the Adversary. The Adversary mocks him for his failure but heals him none the less and possesses his body so that he can participate in killing Wolverine and Forge. Now in a demonic form, Man-Killer Wolf flies to Wolverine and Forge's hut and attacks the two mutants and androids head on. Forge blasts Man-Killer Wolf setting him ablaze and sending him fleeing toward a nearby waterfall. When Elsie-Dee and Albert attempt to accompany Wolverine and Forge in their pursuit, Logan refuses and tells them to keep an eye on the Siksika for them. Elsie-Dee agrees, and when the Siksika demand that Albert walk a gauntlet, he does so -- easily able to walk through their attacks unharmed -- and learns their language. Reaching the end of the gauntlet he takes a ceremonial sword of a warrior chief and is named the new leader of the Siksika. Just then there is a bright flash of light at the waterfall where Wolverine and Forge had chased Man-Killer Wolf and Elsie-Dee, Albert and the Hunter in Darkness decide to go and check it out. Arriving there they find no trace of Logan, Forge, or the Adversary.

Finishing up her story, Elsie-Dee explains thats when the Hunter left them to join his own kind and they eventually went into stasis to conserve their power supplied. Just then Albert gets through the alien interference and detects Logan in Tibet. With a destination found the trio board the stealth bomber and fly off to rendezvous with Wolverine.

In a future time, an armored being runs across the ruins of New York City when his designation as a mutant is detected by a cyborg mutant killer. The mutant killers weapons blast off the beings armor revealing it to be the future Wolverine, who guts the cyborg easily with his Adamantium claws. He then rendezvous with Forge and his mutant resistance. They remark about how they haven't seen each other since they banished the Adversary from the past and were sent back to their own time. When Forge asks what's in the box that Logan is carrying, Logan opens it to revealed the severed head of Elsie-Dee. This comes as a surprise as Albert is a member of Forge's resistance and they are all reunited. Later, upon reaching safety, Elsie-Dee asks why the bones that they found at the Siksika burial mound disappeared during their time travel into the 18th Century. Wolverine and Forge explain that it was a temporal negation, the fact that there were two Logan's, one in the 18th Century and the other at the Crunch[9], it caused a temporal anomaly that altered the course of history, preventing the future Wolverine's death in the past, and ensured that the present day Wolverine lived on in the future.

With everything explained, Elsie-Dee asks Forge to build her a new body, however she is sad that finding her usual token pink dress would be hard to come by in this apocalyptic future, however Wolverine has a surprise for her: Since her old body was destroyed, Logan kept her dress preserved so that she would have one to wear when her new body is ready. Surprised by this, Elsie-Dee tells Logan that she loves him.
