Synopsis for "Wonder Man"
After Wonder Man unsuccessfully auditioned for a part in a soap opera called Secret Hospital and left in a taxi, he thought about how he inherited his father's company, was sentenced to prison for embezzlement, given powers by Baron Zemo upon joining the Masters of Evil before defecting to the Avengers and seemingly dying, was stolen by the Grim Reaper, "resurrected" by the Black Talon and pitted against the Avengers again, although he was comatose, rather than dead, before ionic bombardment and the Living Laser returning him to consciousness with the Serpent Crown changed his body into pure ionic energy, as well as later joining the Avengers and turned to acting to build his confidence. After arriving at the Avengers Mansion, Ant-Man told him about how Cordco was looking for someone with "rather unique abilities".
After arriving at Cordco, Inc.'s Nassau County headquarters, he was greeted by Cal Oakly, who told him about Dr. Ed Wheetley's device that was created to observe other dimensions and offered him a job as a "top-flight A-#1 troubleshooter". While Wheetley was channeling electricity from other labs to boost his machine's power, Oakly introduced Simon to Dulcy Kimble. Gnomes from another dimension appeared as a result and as security failed to stop them, Simon caused them to disappear by unplugging the machine and was given a job. As thanks for saving a guard dog's life, a security guard named Al bought him a drink.
The next day, Wheetley re-plugged his machine and when Oakly attempted to stop him, he was dragged into a portal. As Simon and Kimble were about to go into save him, the former was notified by the Avengers about a crisis at the East Coast Medical Research Center in Manhattan, leaving her to save him herself.
Captain America told him that the same radioactive steam that gave Sandman his powers also gave him cancer and that after learning of megadose radiation treatments being experimented on in the basement labs, he took over the labs and began releasing radiation at random, hoping to be cured, but unless the reactor was shut down, a meltdown would happen. Because Simon was composed of pure energy, the Avengers had him confront Sandman. Wonder Man defeated Sandman by keeping him in his sand form and spraying him down with water before he could harden into sandstone, allowing the former to avert the meltdown and in order to prevent the doctors treating Sandman from absorbing radiation, Wonder Man used rods to absorb the excess from him.
Afterwards, Wonder Man and the Avengers learned that the radiation sent Sandman's cancer into rapid remission. Finally, Wonder Man returned to Cordco and learned that Oakly had been saved. He apologized for leaving him and Oakly responded by claiming that he would have done the same thing if he had his powers, and although that he would always be welcome as a friend, he would need a full-time troubleshooter. Kimble kissed Simon on the cheek before he left.
