History

Before history was written, the Wyrm of Desolation attacked Ta-Lo to kill the Taoist Gods. Nezha defeated the Wyrm by using his Universe Ring to trap him in a pocket dimension. Despite his defeat, the Wyrm slowly corrupted Nezha's spirit and corrupted him. When Nezha brought destruction to Ta-Lo under the Wyrm's influence, the Jade Emperor ordered Nezha's brothers Jinzha and Muzha and the other gods to kill him. After Nezha's death, the Emperor shattered the Universe Ring into twelve pieces and scattered them across several dimensions to prevent the Wyrm's release. When ten of the Rings returned to Ta-Lo, the Emperor had them kept in his armory, only using them for the direst of situations. If all twelve Rings were to be reunited, the Wyrm will be released from its prison.

While MI6 and Tink were studying the Ten Rings, the Rings unexpectedly merged into a large single Ring, which created a portal that summoned the Wyrm of Desolation from its dimension. Despite Black Jack Tarr pushing the Wyrm back into the portal, a Wyrmspawn attached itself onto Clive Reston and possessed him into attacking his teammates. Shang-Chi split the Ring back into ten and used them to free Reston from the spawn and send it back to the Wyrm's dimension. Unbeknownst to all, the Wyrm attached another Wyrmspawn onto Leiko Wu which took possession of her.

Under the Wyrmspawn's influence, Wu entered the Game of Rings as the tenth participant to claim the Ten Rings. Although Wu was freed from the spawn and destroyed by Shang-Chi, a piece of it was able to survive. The spawn originally tried to possess Shen Kuei, but he and Shang-Chi repelled it with their Rings. However when Shang-Chi gained the upper hand against Shen Kuei, Shen impulsively consumed the Wyrm but he immediately regretted it and pleaded with Shang to free him as the Wyrm possessed him and transformed him into a gargantuan monster. As the two throttled each other with their Rings, Red Cannon incapacitated Shen Kuei and destroyed the last piece of the Spawn.
