History

X'Hoss was a wizard who lived in the distant past, when life was extremely rare in the universe. X'Hoss had the ability to see far into the future and he foresaw the coming of the Designate, a woman named Tarene, who would one day change the universe by gathering all that was diverse into one single, unified force.

Knowing that Tarene's followers-to-be would need the means to find her, X'Hoss created the three talismans that later became known as the Illumination Stone, the Map of All-Ending, and the Chalice of Ruins. However, before he could do anything to ensure that his creations would fall into the right hands, X'Hoss was attacked by demonic enemies who tried to take the items from him. Before succumbing to his enemies, X'Hoss managed to transport the items away to places unknown but not before the attackers were able to corrupt them with the taint of darkness. As a result of this corruption,[1] anyone who possessed all three items and drank the tears of the Designate from the Chalice of Ruins would be given unlimited power over death.[2]

Throughout all time, many people tried to collect the three talismans but no one was able to do so until the early 21st century when Thanos succeeded. After Thanos stole the last of the items from the temple in which it had been kept on the planet M'Hass,[3] Thor, Firelord and a Recorder sought the counsel of the Millennium Monarch who ruled that planet. She revealed to them the history of X'Hoss, why he had created the three talismans, and how they had been corrupted by his enemies.[1]

Several years later, when the Designate addressed some assembled heroes before leaving Earth, she stated that she spoke to them as the one foretold by the great sorcerer queen X'Hoss, the one who was destined to elevate sentient races to their maximum evolutionary potential. Based on her recent experiences, she concluded that humanity was not yet worthy to be so elevated.[4]

Notes

  • Although the Millenium Monarch referred to X'Hoss using male pronouns, Tarene later described this character as "the great sorcerer queen X'Hoss." No explanation for this apparent gender switch has yet been revealed.
  • No information has been provided regarding exactly when X'Hoss lived. The Millennium Monarch stated in Thor (Vol. 2) #23 that X'Hoss was alive "Long ago, before time's measure...Back when life was little more than a notion to most of the universe." The entry on Thor Girl that was published in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Women of Marvel 2005 #1 did confirm that he existed "Early in the universe's history" and "billions of years" before Tarene was born but this is still rather vague. As such, while it would be reasonable to assume that X'Hoss may have lived in a time before the beings who became the Elders of the Universe were born and the race now known as the Watchers existed, this has not been definitively established.
  • Due to the dissatisfaction that Jim Starlin felt about how his creation had been handled by several writers, the "Thanos" who had acquired all three talismans was later retconned into having actually been one of the Thanosi all along.[5][6]
