Synopsis for "Promised Vengeance"
In a holographic simulation, witnessed by Rogue, Nightcrawler, and Forge, Mystique appears to fall to her death in Caldecott, Mississippi. Rogue is still struggling with feelings of loss and betrayal. Forge reveals his belief that Mystique might still be alive despite the apparent death. Rogue is skeptical but Forge explains that Mystique's mental instability might have been a facade to prepare them for her "suicide."
X-Factor, along with SHIELD's Colonel Nick Fury, gathers evidence indicating Mystique's survival. They discover she accessed files on Gabrielle Haller, a high-ranking Israeli diplomat, and her son David Haller, also known as Legion. David is comatose in a Tel Aviv hospital, and Mystique's actions indicate that she wants to kill him as Legion was responsible for the death of her beloved Irene Adler aka Destiny.
Mystique disguises herself as Gabrielle Haller and goes to the hospital while X-Factor searches for her. They eventually find her in David's room but just as she is about to inject David with a lethal dose, a mysterious force takes control of her arm. A dark presence fills the room, and the voice of Legion, who had not been awake for years, speaks to Mystique, welcoming her.
Notes
- This is the second of four issues included as a preamble to the Legion Quest event, continuing from X-Men (Vol. 2) #38 and continuing directly into Uncanny X-Men #319.
