Synopsis for "Angels and Demons (Part 1)"
Cyclops approaches Logan at Angel’s Aerie in Colorado and tells him that 17 hours ago, Matthew Risman, the leader of the Purifiers, turned himself in to S.H.I.E.L.D. With some inside help, he and other Purifiers killed a number of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and stole something in the agency’s custody. Cyclops is convinced Risman is going to use whatever it is against mutants, so he tells Logan that he’s going to lead a new X-Force team to end the Purifier threat permanently.
Logan tells Scott he’ll take care of Risman himself, but he won’t lead a team down that path. Cyclops says he’s already told Warpath - who wants revenge for Caliban’s murder - and X-23, and Wolfsbane wants in as well. X-23 is already at the S.H.I.E.L.D. facility in North Dakota. She reports back to Scott that she has Risman’s scent and can track him. Logan punches Cyclops, angry for bringing Laura into this without talking to him, then tells Rahne to go home.
Sometime later, X-23 is surveilling one of Reverend William Stryker’s churches outside Fargo, North Dakota. Wolverine and Warpath join her. Wolverine gives them both one last chance to turn back, but Laura and James refuse.
Inside the church, Matthew Risman preaches to a group of Purifiers. He thanks a man named Eli for leading them to the item that will allow them to restore the future Sentinel, Nimrod, whose inactive shell is in the group’s possession. Risman believes Nimrod will help them turn the tide against the mutants. Risman opens the canister they stole from S.H.I.E.L.D. and removes the head of Bastion. He replaces Nimrod’s head with Bastion’s, and the Sentinel activates with a warning that it has detected mutants nearby.
Wolverine, X-23, and Warpath are suddenly upon the Purifiers, claws and blades slashing. Risman shouts for X-Force to stand down - somehow, he has Rahne Sinclair captive, and holds a gun to her head. Against Wolverine’s orders, X-23 calls Risman’s bluff and rushes the head Purifier. Risman pulls the trigger.
Notes
- Wolfsbane last appeared in X-Factor (Vol. 3) #28.
