Synopsis for "The Broken Land"
Before the Hellfire Gala, on the island of Arakko, Storm fought its regent, the shape-shifter Nameless, for her seat in the Great Ring. Her opponent wore her face, telling the challenger that she did not belong before Storm subdued her with ice and told her to yield. Trapped, Nameless told Storm to know the cost of being Arakkii before striking herself with lightning. Three days ago, the Great Ring met to discuss the future of Arakko, whether they would fight alongside Genesis’ side in Amenth or explore new futures on the planet Arakko. Isca suspected that Storm would make the final call in the matter, and while Storm insisted the decision was not hers alone, but that of the assembled council. Isca abstained, and the Great Ring reached a stalemate, Storm casting the deciding vote for peace.
An Arakkii fisherman walks through a field with his catch, turning back to see Magneto floating above. He introduces himself and requests to build his home there. The fisherman tells him that it’s a solitary spot with little company but himself, and sensing Magneto’s pain, encourages him to speak it. The master of magnetism forms his Autumn Palace as he speaks to the man of his shattered dreams.
Sunspot drinks alongside Kobak Never-Held in his new investment, the Red Lagoon bar in Port Prometheus. They speak of their first loves, both having passed, and drink to their pain and the business of living before hearing Vulcan scream at a Shi’ar patron, demanding recognition for having led the Shi’ar to greatness. Sunspot calls out the enraged former emperor, powering up and looking to put an end to this outburst. Vulcan absorbs Sunspot’s solar energy and attacks him, before Thunderbird intervenes and knocks Vulcan to the floor. Commander Brand and Security Chief Cable of S.W.O.R.D. disperse the ruckus, Cable telekinetically knocking out his uncle before bickering with Thunderbird. Brand tells Cable to bring Vulcan back to S.W.O.R.D. Station Two and tells Thunderbird his Martian privileges are revoked, though Sunspot tells him he is welcome at the Red Lagoon. Thunderbird warns Sunspot to watch his back as he leaves.
Isca questions the peace brought on by Storm’s leadership as they leave a meeting of the Great Ring. Brand finds Storm outside and proposes that she form a new team of X-Men to shape Arakko’s culture, telling her it’s what a queen does. Stepping through a Krakoan gate to her throneroom, Storm casts aside her headpiece and calls down lightning to destroy the throne.
In the Autumn Palace, Magneto gets to know the Fisher King better, discovering he has no mutant gift before Sunspot walks in the open door. Suspecting Brand has her own plans for Arakko, he asks them to form a new team of X-Men to protect Mars. Storm enters, saying she’s in on the team but clarifying that the Brotherhood will defend the broken land of Arakko.
