Synopsis for "Loss"
Professor X and the Five welcome Cable back to the living in Arbor Magna. The resurrected mutant follows a waiting Thunderbird outside, using his specially requested stealth arm to shield their conversation from surveillance. Thunderbird promises consequences for Cable’s treatment of his younger brother Warpath after the current matter is concluded, and Manifold joins them to discuss Abigail Brand. On the Keep, Storm questions the S.W.O.R.D. Commander concerning Vulcan’s public challenge to Tarn the Uncaring for the Seat of Loss. Mentallo reports secretly to Brand that Vulcan’s mental state is dangerous, his true self buried deep under his surface personality. Inside the Autumn Palace, the Brotherhood try to convince Magneto to take Tarn’s seat but tearfully he refuses, claiming to be done with councils and utopias. Sunspot refuses this excuse, telling his former headmaster that he may not want to do it but he has the ability. Magneto turns away, stating that Sunspot doesn’t know him.
Mutants take their seats in the ring around the Circle Perilous as the challenge nears its start. Sunspot sits beside Isca the Unbeaten, and Storm asks Khora of the Burning Heart of Vulcan’s chances, Khora responding that Tarn is quick and merciless, but that Brand may have taught him something. Ora Serrata begins the challenge, and as Tarn’s eyes glow signalling his genomic manipulations, so too do Vulcan’s as he uses his power manipulation to cancel Tarn’s gifts. The two engage in a heated fist fight, Vulcan landing some blows before Tarn brutally beats him to death. Gloating, Tarn asks if there are any others who would stand against him. Magneto enters the arena and formally challenges Tarn, who stalls his answer in order to regain his powers. In the audience, Sunspot bets Isca that Tarn will win, sending her into a fury that he would manipulate her power to never lose in this way. She claims a challenge by insult and snaps Sunspot’s neck, but is ignored as Ora Serrata asks how Tarn will answer Magneto’s challenge. No sooner does he accept, eyes glowing with power, than Magneto forces his helmet down on Tarn’s head, restricting his foe's power, before crushing his skull and claiming his seat on the Great Ring.
