Synopsis for "Strangers ...in a Savage Land!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
X-Men #62

Having recovered from his battle against Sauron, Angel learns from Havok and Lorna that the X-Men went after Karl Lykos at the Anderssen residence. There, Warren finds Mr. Anderssen and learns that the X-Men subsequently went to Tierra Del Fuego, going after Anderssen's daughter Tanya who had foolishly gone after Lykos who went there to die. Finding Tanya, she explains that Lykos died and tells him that his fellow X-Men had gone down below the icy cavern to find the body. Warren flies down and finds that the cavern leads to the Savage Land, where he is attacked by Pterodactyls. Struck by one of the dinosaurs, Warren plummets to the prehistoric jungle below. The fall is near-fatal, and the dying Warren is found by a frog-like humanoid named Amphibious and his master, a silver-haired man called the Creator. The Creator pronounces that Angel is dead and believes that even death is not reversible by his own science.

Elsewhere in the Savage Land, the X-Men have their own dinosaur troubles while searching for the body of Karl Lykos. They are attacked by a Tyrannosaurus Rex which they easily fend off. They are then visited by their old ally Ka-Zar, who demands that they be silent. When Iceman annoyingly encases Ka-Zar's pointed hand with ice, this causes the lord of the Savage Land to lash out. Ka-Zar briefly spars with Beast until the fight is broken off by the arrival of Ka-Zar's trusted sabertooth tiger, Zabu. Deciding that his fight is with others, Ka-Zar darts off into the jungle with Zabu, with the curious X-Men following after him. The X-Men witness as Ka-Zar attacks one of the Creator's Mutates (Equilibrius) leading the Swamp Men with a number of captured members of the Water People Tribe. When the X-Men see that the Mutates have super-powers, they jump into the battle, lending Ka-Zar a much-needed hand.

While at the high tech base of the Creator, the Creator uses his cryogenic devices to attempt to revive Warren back to life while his other Mutates, Brainchild, Lupo, Gaza, Piper, Amphibius, and Barbarus watch on. The experiment is a success and Warren is brought back from the brink of death. When Equilibrius returns to the base and informs the Creator that Ka-Zar had attacked him with the X-Men's aid, the Creator tells Warren that Ka-Zar has become a killer who impedes his work. Owing to the Creator of his life, Warren agrees to help him fight off Ka-Zar's attacking forces even if it means fighting his own comrades in the X-Men.

Back at the battle between Ka-Zar, the X-Men, and the Swamp People, the heroes defeat the Swamp People and Ka-Zar allows them to flee. Leading the X-Men onward, he overhears the music played by the Mutate the Piper, whose music calls forth a sea beast to attack them. While the X-Men keep the creature busy, Ka-Zar and Zabu locate Piper and silence him, while the X-Men easily defeat the monster.

Back at the Creator's base, the Creator explains Warren that using his technology he was able to mutate some of the Savage Land primitives into the beings that he sees before them, he introduces Warren to them and reveals their various powers and abilities as a result of their mutations. Warren is awestruck, and goes so far as to consider the Creator like a prehistoric Professor X. Once again directing Warren's attention to the fact that the X-Men and Ka-Zar are approaching his base, Warren tells the Creator that he will seek out his friends and try to talk them into joining the Creator's side.

When Warren leaves, the please Creator's true colors show. He is really an evil genius hoping to use his work here to try and take over the world. When Amphibious asks if the Angel suspects, the Creator scoffs at the notion, going to a secret room where he marvels about how Warren did not recognize him, putting his hand down on the helmet of Magneto, the Creator muses that clothes really do make the man.

Synopsis for "War in the World Below!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
X-Men #63

Continued from the last issue...

Magneto has set up shop in the Savage Land, using his technology to create powerful Mutates out of the savages in the area. After reviving Angel from the brink of death, he has convinced the young mutant that he is being persecuted by Ka-Zar, who has teamed up with the other X-Men to stop him. Not recognizing the creator as his oldest foe, Angel flies off to try and get his comrades to switch over to Magneto's side, a plan that Magneto gloats over.

When Warren arrives, the X-Men are shocked to find their friend and in a modified costume to boot. When he mentions having met the Creator, Ka-Zar attacks him and demands answers, however, the X-Men try to break up the fight, prompting Ka-Zar and Zabu to flee to pursue the Creator on their own. Angel quickly explains how the Creator saved him from death and he claims that Ka-Zar is in the wrong. Following after the king of the Savage Land, they see the Mutate Gaza get the drop on Ka-Zar. Trying to break up the fight, the X-Men are attacked by Amphibious and an army of savages loyal to the Creator. With Amphibious ordering the X-Men and Ka-Zar's death, the X-Men realize that the Creator is not as benevolent as they originally thought and mount a counterattack.

Feeling guilty over almost siding with a murderer, Angel decides to face the Creator on his own and flies off into his citadel. There he is confronted by the Creator, who reveals that he is really Magneto. Shocked to find his old enemy alive and well, Warren learns how Magneto survived their last encounter. When his base was destroyed, he managed to escape a drowning death by using his magnetic powers to burrow through the Earth where he traveled to the Savage Land and decided to make it his home. With the story of how he cheated death revealed, Magneto turns Warren's attention to a glowing sphere, and something within shocks Warren.

Outside, the X-Men and Ka-Zar have finished off the last of their opposition and storm the Creator's citadel. They burst through the fence to find wolves on the other side waiting for them; however, they are fended off by Zabu. Entering the base, they are attacked by Amphibious and Brainchild, whom they easily defeat. Taking Amphibious as their hostage, Beast forces him to lead the way to their master, whom they are equally as shocked to find is Magneto, alive and well. The Master of Magnetism reveals his latest Mutate creation, Lorelei, a Mutate whose voice enthralls all the men in the room.

Lorelei's voice has no effect on Marvel Girl who attacks Magneto, putting the evil mutant at a distinct disadvantage because he is not able to use his full magnetic powers around his sensitive machinery. Magneto is forced to use high tech devices to defend himself. Marvel Girl keeps Magneto distracted with her telekinetic attacks and uses her telepathic powers on Lorelei to silence her long enough for the other X-Men to snap out of their trances. Free from Lorelei's control, Cyclops uses his optic blasts on Magneto's machines causing them to explode.

Too late to stop the exploding machines, Magneto is lost in the explosions, seemingly killed once more, while the X-Men flee the base with the Mutates. Once outside, the X-Men watch in surprise as the Mutates are restored back to their normal forms with the destruction of Magneto's devices. With the threat ended, Ka-Zar wonders who could live with such fantastic powers when they would potentially bring them nothing but fear and loathing from normal humans, the Beast responds for the whole group by saying the X-Men can.

Synopsis for "The Coming of Sunfire!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
X-Men #64

A new mutant named Sunfire has made his debut appearance in New York City, denouncing all those below him as nothing more than ants. His activity has set off the X-Men's Cerebro unit, prompting Beast to call Angel to check it out and the group to go and find out if this mutant is a ally or an enemy.

Sunfire has flown to the United Nations building where Saburo Yoshida, Japanese diplomat, has arrived to present the "Youth of the World" statue as a gift to the United States. The imperialist Sunfire finds such a gesture foolish. He crashes the ceremony, denouncing Yoshida as a traitor and destroying the statue with his microwave powers. His reign of terror on the crowd is cut short when he is attacked by Angel, Beast and Iceman, who give him a good fight. After blasting Beast with his heat ray, Sunfire flees, proving he is able to fly faster than Angel could even fathom. Angel and Iceman take the wounded Beast to the apartment the X-Men keep in the city, where Beast's burns are treated by Jean, while they fill Scott in on what happened.

Sunfire, really Shiro Yoshida, son of Saburo, returns to his Uncle Tomo's hideout where he reports back. When Shiro comments on how he feels his actions are somewhat wrong, Tomo reminds Shiro of the American's dropping the atomic bomb on Japan during World War II. He explains how his mother, while miles away from the blast, was affected and died giving birth to Shiro many years later. Tomo goes on to explain how he took young Shiro under his wing and taught him to despise the America's for what they did during the war. He later took him to some remaining ruins of Hiroshima where young Shiro's mutant powers manifested, prompting Tomo to train him in the use of his powers as a supporter of Imperial Japanese ideals, as the costumed mutant Sunfire. Renewing Shiro's hatred of America, Tomo prepares the angry young mutant for his plot to humble America before the entire world.

The X-Men meanwhile use Jean's telepathic powers to try and track down Sunfire and are surprised to find out that he is traveling in a diplomatic vehicle. Deciding to play it cautious, they follow the car to JFK Airport, where Shiro and those in the car board a plane to Washington D.C. The X-Men follow and the Angel almost has a near fatal close call when he is almost sucked into the planes turbine and is saved by Iceman's quick intervention.

In Washington, Tomo and Shiro begin plotting and Shiro's father walks in hearing Shiro talking about getting revenge against America and slaps his son for his treasonous ideas, and scolds him for having such ideas. Although Shiro says nothing, he believes that he will soon show his father that he is wrong.

The X-Men have switched to their civilian guises and canvas around Washington, waiting for Sunfire to make another appearance. When Shiro is changing into his Sunfire costume, he is once more caught by his father who denounces his son's terrorist tactics and ideas and is struck down for his troubles. Tomo orders Sunfire to go out and attack the Capital Building. As soon as Sunfire arrives, the X-Men attack, with Angel and Iceman being the first wave. Warren is easily downed, however a quick ice shield from Iceman prevents him from serious harm but then Iceman is also easily defeated by Sunfire. Cyclops has Marvel Girl telekinetically raise him up to Sunfire's level and the two pit their mutant powers against one another, however Sunfire still proves to be the victor. His attack is stopped when Marvel Girl begins to attack his mind telepathically, until Saburo appears and once more denounces his son for his actions.

As the two argue, Tomo appears and shoots Saburo in the back, knocking him off of the Capital Building to the ground below. In anger, Sunfire blasts his own uncle with his powers, killing him. Finding that his father is dying, Shiro pulls off his mask and renounces his imperialist ways, vowing to undo the wrongs he has committed. As he dies, Saburo leaves his son with a request; forge the tools of peace from the weapons of war.

With the authorities gathering around the scene, the X-Men decide to depart, leaving Shiro to mourn the loss of his father, deciding that Shiro had learned the foolishness of his ways, and at a terrible price.
