History

Once a bright and prosperous city, Yaralet was eventually oppressed by the evil rule of Munthassem Khan, who turned from a gentle and wise satrap to a cruel and savage autocrat after gaining possession of the Hand of Nergal. Plotters -- Prince Thann and Atalis the Philosopher -- ordered the slave girl, Hildico, to bring Conan to them, as the Cimmerian was the wearer of the Heart of Tammuz, the counter-talisman for the Hand of Nergal. The trio then confronted Munthassem Khan in his palace, and watched as the two artifacts released the essence of ancient colossal beings of light and darkness, who began their eternal struggle anew. The being of light from the Heart of Tammuz won the battle. After a week of relaxation, Conan itched to travel back through Turan again, but this time in the company of Hildico.[1]

Many years later, Conan and several other warriors traveled to Munthassem Khan's former quarters, where they were confronted by Atalis who revealed his involvement with the Hand of Nergal, and also revealed his warrior servant, Fafnir of the Demon Hand.[2]

Hildico

Brythunian slave girl Hildico was ordered by her master Atalis the Far Seeing to bring Conan back to him. She arrived at the battlefield near the River Nezvaya just as the Devil-Beasts of Nergal swooped down and fleeing, riderless horse nearly trampled her. She was then found unconscious by the Cimmerian, who agreed to come with her to the house of Atalis. When the barbarian confronted the evil satrap Munthassem Khan in his palace, she managed to summon the power of the Heart of Tammuz.[1]

Munthassem Khan

Munthassem Khan was a wise and gentle satrap, who ruled with justice and mercy, busying himself with his collection of antiquities and ancient objects, which absorbed his keen, questing mind. One day, a far-ranging caravan brought him, from the depths of demon-haunted Stygia, the Hand of Nergal, a powerful talisman who changed him into a cruel and savage tyrant. He then inaugurated a reign of terror, where he slew all the wizards in Yaralet and bestowed curses on his enemies, even rebelling to King Yildiz of Turan. When Conan entered his palace and summoned the power of the Heart of Tammuz, the two artifacts released the essence of ancient colossal beings of light and darkness, who began their eternal struggle anew. After Tammuz' victory, nothing was left of the senseless, motionless form of Munthassem Khan, save for a handful of smoldering ashes.[1]
