History

Zarathos was held prisoner and tortured by the demon Mephisto after failing in a power grab. He was sprung free by Satana Hellstromand her human pet Fenn and taken to Earth where he could heal from his wounds and regain his strength. Fenn explained to Zarathos that he sought the Varkath Star, the amulet that could control any demon, to have revenge on Mephisto himself and offered Zarathos his service in dethroning Mephisto. Fenn had Satana suck out the souls of humans and feed them to Zarathos to speed up his recovery, even through both of them were terrified of his power.

Zarathos accepted their service and joined their Triumvirate, but grew impatient from hiding and attempted to claim the Varkath Star before he or Fenn were fully ready. Too afraid to stop him, Satana teleported the Triumvirate to Transia, where they discovered the buried vault protected by strong magical seals. Zarathos used his powers to unearth it, but was unable to break the wards before they were attacked by the Midnight Suns and Satana had to them teleport away. They bided time as Zarathos grew in power, and with only hours remaining before the vault would open on their own, went back to Transia and faced the Suns again.

Zarathos and Satana fought the group with the army of the Soulless, while Fenn used his technology to accelerate the seal's degradation and break into the vault. With its contents before him, he only grabbed the map to Lilith and had Hydra mystics teleport him away, uncaring who the Varkath Star fell to or what they were going to do with it. While Zarathos was distracted fighting, Magik used a portal to send him back into Limbo, where Mephisto easily picked him up and resumed his torture.[1]

Powers

Zarathos is a demon of immense power. Even Hell Lords are afraid of him, as at his full power he can crush some of them with no effort and give a good fight even to to stronger ones. Zarathos can recharge his power by simply existing in the Earth dimension, where he feeds on the general suffering around. By directly consuming human souls, his strength can grow exponentially faster.[1]
