History

Zhib-Ran was an elected leader of a world called Yttrium in the Microverse which was destroyed until repeated incursions into the Microverse by Genis-Vell battling Sentry unleashed vast energies that disrupted Yttrium's axis, destroying it in the process. Zhib-Ran was the sole survivor of this catastrophe, thrown into a cosmic maelstrom until he was rescued by Grandmaster who brought him to Earth. The incident granted him radiation-based superpowers. After learning about the reasons behind his world's destruction from Grandmaster, he joined the reformed Squadron Sinister and clashed with the Thunderbolts.[2][3][1]

Aside from his revenge against Genis-Vell, Hyperion's goal was to help protect the Earth, by any means necessary. He was, however, manipulated by the power-seeking Grandmaster to serve in his campaign against Baron Zemo over the control of the access to the Wellspring of Power. During Squadron's final battle against Thunderbolts, Hyperion was defeated by Radioactive Man who was able to suppress his radiation-based powers. Ultimately, he and the rest of the Squadron disappeared without a trace among the unleashed energies of Wellspring of Power, during the fight between Zemo and Grandmaster.[2][4]

Powers

Hyperion possesses powers of radioactive nature, granted to him by exposure to a cosmic maelstrom.[2][1]

  • Superhuman Strength: Hyperion possessed great physical strength, able to lift at least 75 tons.[1]
  • Superhuman Speed: Hyperion was able to run and move at speeds that are beyond the natural physical limits of the finest human athlete.[1]
  • Superhuman Stamina: Hyperion is virtually tireless.[1]
  • Superhuman Durability: Hyperion possessed extraordinary superhuman durability. He is able to withstand extreme variations in temperature, from 455 degrees below zero to 11,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and survive under extreme pressures. [1]
  • Immortality: Hyperion was immune to the effects of aging and diseases.[1]
  • Flight: By releasing the by-products of the quasi-nuclear reactions within his body, Hyperion could propel himself through the air at great speeds for an extended period of time. He can achieve a speed of Mach 2 (1,350 miles per hour).[1]
  • Superhuman Hearing: He could hear Speed Demon's heart rate quickening while he was planning to betray him and Doctor Spectrum.[2]
  • Plasma Vision: Hyperion could emit beams of intense heat from his eyes that could reach temperatures of 12,000 degrees Fahrenheit. He can also see all forms of the electromagnetic spectrum, granting himself a type of "x-ray vision" that allowed him to see clearly through any substance, with the exception of lead.[1]

Weaknesses

  • Radiation: Due to the radiation-based nature of his powers Hyperion can be weakened or even hurt by a particular radiation frequency, possible equivalent to that of trans-uranic Argonite isotopes.[1] Because radiation is the source of his power, he loses his powers if the radiation is somehow suppressed.[citation needed]
  • Hypersonics: Due to his superhuman senses Hyperion is vulnerable to hypersonics, which can cause him extreme pain and blood loss from the ears and nose.[3]

Trivia

  • Hyperion was created as a pastiche of DC Comics' Superman.
