Synopsis for "The Magician!"
The story opens at the Escalante Tavern with a magician Louis Foucard displaying his magical tricks. Sergeant Mendoza, as well as Don Alejandro de la Vega may have been impressed, but not so for Don Diego. Victoria Escalante is requested by Foucard to help with the resurrection of a dead bird. There is some romantic interest by Foucard in Victoria.
Don Diego was invited on stage and was easily pickpocketed by Foucard. With the ease at which he did that Don Diego tries to piece together how he may have resurrected the bird, and what kind of chemicals may have been used. Later he hears a story from the sergeant about a robbery that involved fire balls and the gold shipment arriving. Because of this Don Diego thought he might need to appear at the stage coach arrival as Zorro. The fireballs did appear, and everybody was frightened, and the thief arrived to acquire the gold. Zorro was there, and took some of the powder the would be thief was using and quickly races back to the Los Angeles Pueblo, to see if he could find Foucard sneaking back into his room. In the shadows Zorro was fooled by a manikin in bed sleeping. Don Diego returns to his lab with Felipe and tells him that the chemical was pyrositic sulfate. He states it could act as a stimulant to resurrect the bird and also when combined with alcohol could be explosive.
With Zorro now, convinced that Foucard was indeed the criminal, he realizes that Victoria may be in trouble. Victoria had refused the offer of marriage from Foucard and he was actually holding her at knifepoint under the table to get her to leave with him. Zorro overturns the table thus exposing Foucard ,but he , with his sword disarms, Zorro as they had up the stairwell. In the end Zorro uses the pyrotechnic tricks of the magician to capture him and turn them over to the sergeant. The story closes with Victoria, enamored in the thoughts of Zorro, and we see the Alcalde, returning to pursue his hunting down Zorro.
